Tips for Boating with a Dog
Want to bring your furry best friend on your next boat trip? Follow the below guide on safe boating with a dog.
Carry a Pet First-Aid Kit
Pets need medical supplies just like people. You can invest in a pet-friendly first-aid kit that’s approved by the American Humane Society or build your own. Here are some recommendations for items to include:
- Gauze pads
- Adhesive tape
- Cotton swabs or balls
- 3% hydrogen peroxide (to induce vomiting; check with your veterinarian first)
- Ice pack
- Nitrile gloves
- Tweezers
- Blunt scissors
- Antibiotic cream
- Towels
- Alcohol wipes

Keep Your Pet Hydrated
Staying hydrated is as important for animals as it is for people, especially on a hot, sunny day. Carry enough bottled water on board for all of your passengers, including your furry friends. You can purchase an inexpensive collapsible water bowl to use on your boat; just empty it over the side when your pet is done drinking.
Provide a Potty Space
Your pet will likely need to answer the call of nature on board your boat. They may be a bit scared to do so, but you should provide a litter box or training pad for your pet to use in a secluded space, such as in the cabin.
Harness Your Pet
You’ll want to make sure that you have a harness for your pet that allows you to grab your pet if needed. A collar isn’t sufficient for this, and a harness with a leash will be necessary when your pet is at the dock, unless you choose to place your pet in a crate or carrier between the boat and your car.
